Obtaining a Permit

When do you need a permit?

Below are some examples of permits needed prior to beginning work. Please note that this list is not meant to include everything — please call the Code Compliance Supervisor, Piper Turner, at (904) 2702400 Ext. 36 to verify if you do not see something on the list.

  • Building (including all new construction and remodeling)
  • Decks, patios or walkways
  • Driveways
  • Electrical work
  • Fences and walls
  • Fireplaces
  • Garage/yard sales
  • Gas piping
  • Heat and air conditioning
  • Irrigation systems
  • Plumbing (including hot water heater replacements)
  • Portable storage units (PODS)
  • Removal or pruning of trees
  • Roofing
  • Signs
  • Special events
  • Storage sheds
  • Swimming pools
  • Window, skylights, and garage doors
  • Work on the right-of-way (such as planting, pavers, driveway aprons, etc.)

What is needed to obtain a permit?

Building permits generally require 2 copies of detailed plans, a recent certified land survey, energy sheets, if square footage is to be added, and documentation that the proposed structure will meet 130 mph wind code. Additional information may be needed depending on the type of construction to be done or the location of the property.
